Welcome to ABPW! We appreciate your interest in our organization and encourage you to read about our rich heritage. You are invited to discover more about the organization, our members and the contributions our members are making in the Clear Lake community. A brief history of our organization as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary in 2011 is shared below; additional information can be found at the links on the left side of the page.
ABPW was originally founded in 1981 by a small group of women in the Clear Lake area; our original leader was Dr. Rosemary Pledger, the first Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Houston – Clear Lake (UHCL). By having a membership of over 50 women who hold influential positions in the community, the organization thrives with its members continuing to have a significant economic, educational and civic impact on the Clear Lake area community.
Our five purposes are to:
- Provide an association to promote the business services and financial advancement of its members;
- Encourage and support the membership to serve in positions of civic responsibility;
- Provide fellowship among the membership;
- Become a political force in the community by supporting local, state, and national issues; and
- Provide leadership and educational guidance in the community.
Our purposes are accomplished in many varied ways. We hold monthly meetings where informative speakers provide information on topics relevant to our membership. We provide scholarships to students at UHCL, act as role models and serve as mentors to teenage girls in a local senior high school through our “SEEDS” program and host socials to encourage fellowship among our members. We support several local organizations which include Communities in Schools—Bay Area.
The theme as we celebrate 30 years is “ACT-Achieve, Commit, Together.” We believe that through sustaining the commitment we make together through our fellowship we can achieve all the goals outlined within ABPW’s mission. Synergistic relationships allow us to attain these goals by working hand in hand with each other and within our community. We will again work to achieve our five purposes. Congratulations ABPW!
